How did Greyhawk come about?
The first Greyhawk story was written and drawn by McCrary in 1985. It was about a space pirate and his crew dealing with an evil demon who was coming into the galaxy via a newborn child. Over the years, McCrary worked on several other versions, some of which had Greyhawk as a traditional pirate in the caribbean. In 1994, after completing the 2-issue mini-series “Mister America,” McCrary proposed following up “Mister America” with a Greyhawk story to Largent. When the question came up of whether or not to have it set in space or on Earth in the past, Largent suggested they do both and they began working on the new characters and situations that would make that possible. Originally planned as another mini-series, it was decided halfway through the story to make it a graphic novel and a new version of that story became the “first” Greyhawk story (actually the SIXTH!) It was self-published in 1997. Twelve years later, McCrary pitched the idea of having The Wannabe Pirates meet Greyhawk. This led to running the graphic novel on the site. Largent and McCrary’s renewed involvement with the character prompted them to make Greyhawk a permanent part of the website and they began working on new adventures for Greyhawk.
